FALLEN
2020, ORTISEI, ITALY
COMMISSIONED FOR THE BIENNALE GHERDËINA 7
CURATED BY ADAM BUDAK
WOOD AND PAINT, 304.8 x 304.8 x 182.8 CM
Commissioned for the 7th edition of the Biennale Gherdëina, an international exhibition of contemporary art, MacLeod creates a new work entitled Fallen, which consists of a larger than life sculpture, depicting the biblical Adam and Eve. Inspired by a miniature historical sculpture from the collection of the Gherdëina Museum in Ortisei, Fallen, consists of two wooden figures turned toward one another with a pile of fallen apples at their feet.
The work plays on the different meanings of the word fallen and is MacLeod’s ironic take on the biblical myth of world-making. Lost and hopeless in a tree-less paradise, Adam and Eve appear almost grotesque.
The Biennale Gherdëina, entitled ‘– a breath? a name? – the ways of world making’ addressed themes such as community, belonging, humility, and collective actions within our social and physical environments.
Curated by Adam Budak (Prague), ‘– a breath? a name? – the ways of world making’ consisted of exhibitions in public spaces throughout Ortisei/Val Gardena, situated in the surrounding Dolomites, a UNESCO world heritage site.
